Folk Art Paintings and Sculpture

“I was born in Lansing, Michigan and have been carving for about 25 years. I like wildlife, so most of my carvings involve wildlife or nature-type things. I was told when I started that you needed to be some sort of sketch artist to draw out your plans. I can sketch better now than I could back then. Through carving I’ve learned to sketch. I make most of my carving knives either out of old straight razor blades or something similar. I’ve also made a few of my gouges by taking an old wood chisel and carefully grinding the blade out to the depth I wanted. I carve using bass wood, cedar, poplar, and a little pine.” Joe and his work have recently been featured in the television series "Rare Visions and Roadside Attractions", and the book "Strange Michigan" by Linda Godfrey.
