Ellie Hudovernik
Ceramic Tile Artist
Ellie Hudovernik earned a degree in ceramics from the University of Wisconsin and began creating ceramic tiles featuring her art in 1982. She likens her complex 17-step process to print-making. Each tile begins with a mold. Using dental tools, she carves the design in relief on a clay slab, then casts the slab in plaster. After the plaster mold dries, Ellie presses the clay into it. Next, she removes the pressed clay and lets it air-dry for 2 weeks. She then fires the tile, paints it, and fires it three more times.
“I do all gentle, rural images. Life is so hectic, I think people like to look at my
tiles because they slow life down for them for a few seconds.”
